Product Questions

BALSAMIC VINEGARS

How should balsamic vinegar be stored?

Store in a cool, dark cupboard or pantry. Keep bottle closed and away from heat and light.

How old is your balsamic vinegar?

This is a surprisingly complicated answer. Click here to read about it.

What is the difference between Dark and White Balsamic?

Both products are made from Grape Must (crushed Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes) blended with Wine Vinegar. Dark Balsamic has the Grape Must cooked down and water evaporates to reduce the must at a temperature at which the natural sugars will caramelize. It is then blended with red wine vinegar.

White Balsamic has the Grape Must cooked down and reduced in a vacuum chamber. Water evaporates at a lower temperature in a vacuum. Therefore, the natural sugars do not get hot enough to caramelize and turn dark. White wine vinegar is then blended with the Grape Must. White balsamic is more of a golden yellow color.

What is the shelf life of balsamic vinegar?

Producers usually put a five-year “best-by” date on the bottle. In actuality, there is balsamic vinegar available for sale that is over 100 years old. Balsamic Vinegar contains natural preservatives – sugar, acid, and sulfites. There has to be a best-by date though. Even Himalayan Sea Salt has a 5 year “best-by” date even though it is already millions of years old. Click here to view Harvest Chart.

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL (EVOO)

What is Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

“Extra” relates to the first cold pressing of the ripe green olives. It is the highest grade for olive oils and is the best that can be sold. Extra Virgin Olive Oil means that it has less than 0.8% oleic acid.

What does "First Press" and "Cold Press" mean?

These terms are interchangeable. They are terms used in the past when initial pressure was applied by hard presses producing only a small amount of olive oil from the olive paste. To extract even more oil, hot water was applied to the olive paste to improve the flow of the oil. Producers today use these terms to affirm that EVOO is an unrefined, natural product that has undergone very little processing, making it a top-of-the-line oil.

Are your Extra Virgin Olive Oils first cold pressed?

Yes. All of our Extra Virgin Olive Oils are first cold pressed. Cold pressed is a chemical free process using only pressure, producing a higher quality olive oil that is lower in acidity. Also, our oils are all filtered, which leads to clearer oil with no residue at the bottom of the bottle.

How should EVOO be stored?

All olive oils should be stored in a cool (70 to 75 degrees) dark location, especially extra virgin olive oils. Light and heat are two of the three enemies of olive oil. They should also be bottled in dark containers to shield the oil from harmful UV rays and light. It should not be stored in the refrigerator.

How long does olive oil stay fresh?

Freshness is the key to taste in olive oil, especially extra virgin. After one year, the fresh taste will begin to dissipate. The producer of our base extra virgin olive oil (used in the flavored EVOO) recommends a two-year best by date. How your olive oil is stored can have a great impact on the fresh flavor.

Why is olive oil considered superior to other oils?

Taste and health benefits are the main difference between olive oil and store-bought vegetable oils. Vegetable oils are generally tasteless and ultra-processed. Extra virgin olive oil adds a fresh flavor that is unique to itself and is a healthy replacement for butter or margarine. EVOO is fresh pressed from the fruit of the olive tree leaving the color, taste, vitamins and nutrients intact. Because of the antioxidant components, olive oil keeps itself fresh longer than vegetable oil.

Can I replace butter, margarine and other oils with olive oil?

Yes! As a straight replacement for butter, margarine and oils in recipes, be sure to use a mellow-style EVOO, such as our House Blend Varietal EVOO. Replace vegetable oil in brownie recipes with Blood Orange EVOO. Use Butter EVOO in place of butter when sautéing vegetables or making rice. The opportunities are truly endless.

Are there different grades of olive oil?

There are four grades of olive oil:

  • Extra Virgin: This is the highest quality rating with acidity levels of less than 1%.
  • Virgin: Acidity levels of less than 2%.
  • Semi-Fine: Aroma and taste defects can be detected and acidity levels are less than 3%.
  • Olive Oil: This is a blend of chemically refined and unrefined virgin oils.
What are the nutritional components of extra virgin olive oil?
  • 1 Tbsp: 120 calories, 14g fat, 0g cholesterol, 0% sodium, Cholesterol free.
  • Fats: 77% is monounsaturated, 9% polyunsaturated, 14% vegetable-derived saturated.
  • Extra Virgin: Contains antioxidants, beta-carotene and Vitamin E, as well as phenolic compounds tyrosol and hydroxyturosol.
  • Studies have shown that when substituted for saturated fats, monounsaturated fats lower blood cholesterol (especially harmful LDL), while protecting “good” high-density HDL.
Should I cook with extra virgin olive oil?

Yes… absolutely! Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a smoking point of 400 degrees which makes it great for sautéing (300 degrees) and frying (340 degrees). It can also be used for deep frying.

What is the shelf life of EVOO?

Most producers use a two-year (2) “best by” date. Some use 18 months, some use 30 months. Our producer uses the two-year “best by” date. The time frame starts from the harvest date, not the packaging date. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is technically a fresh fruit juice. It is always going to be freshest on day one. There is a gradual decline in freshness over the two-year timeframe. Click here to view Harvest Chart.

What is the difference between EVOO and Pure Olive Oil?

FLAVORINGS

How do you flavor the oils and vinegars?

We use all natural, mainly liquid flavorings. We stir the flavorings into the oil or balsamic just prior to bottling. No heat is used in the process. The flavored Extra Virgin Olive Oils use EVOO-based flavorings; the balsamics use alcohol extract-based flavorings. Some products use dry spices which are blended in with an immersion blender. There are many complicated flavors and recipes. Feel free to call with questions about specific products. Flavorings are all-natural and vegan (plant-based), and many, not all, are organic.

GENERAL

Do you have more information about your EVOO and Balsamic Vinegar that I can share with my staff?

Yes… please view (or download… link is at the end of the page) the following:

The Story of our Balsamic Vinegar

The Story of our EVOO

Prices

What are your prices?

You can view our current prices on our website: www.bulkwholesaleoliveoil.com. You’ll need to login (upper right corner) and then hover over Products (header navigation) to view the categories.

Do you have a tiered pricing structure?

No. Being hand-bottled, there is no real economy of scale. Your cost is the same if you order one case or a hundred. We decided from day one to offer the best prices we could, while still paying good wages and buying premium raw products. We don’t punish the little guy for being little. You can save a lot of money by shipping larger quantities, thereby lowering your shipping cost per item… which can be as much as 20% overall cost savings.

Bottle sizes

What size bottles do you sell?

We offer pre-bottled products in 375ml Bordeaux Green and 100ml Marasca Green formats: Click here to see pictures and specs. If you would prefer other bottle types/sizes, we recommend purchasing bulk in our 10L buckets and bottling yourself.

Quality / Testing

Are your products Non-GMO?

Yes. There are nine GMO crops commercially available in the U.S.: corn, soybeans, cotton, canola, alfalfa, sugar beets, papayas, squash, apples, pink pineapples, and potatoes. https://gmoanswers.com/ask/are-avocados-genetically-modified-and-if-so-are-there-specific-countries-sell-gmofree-varieties

The only product we sell that uses any of the preceding crops is our Sweet Dragon Balsamic Soy Sauce. However, we use Kikkoman brand soy sauce which is guaranteed GMO-free. View Kikkoman Sustainability Commitment.

Are your products Organic?

None of our products are USDA Certified Organic. However, the base Extra Virgin Olive Oil that we use for all of our flavored EVOO comes from Tunisia. Ninety seven percent (97%) of all olive oil production in Tunisia is organic because many of the trees are old-growth, hundreds of years old. Tunisia has been producing olive oil for thousands of years. The trees are “dry-farmed” meaning there is no irrigation system, just rainfall. Applying any sort of fertilizers or herbicides would be expensive and it’s really not necessary. The trees are all harvested by hand with rakes and nets.

Are your products Gluten Free?

Mostly. Our flavored pastas are made from wheat, but they are sourced from another producer and not made in our warehouse; they arrive to us already packaged. Our “Sweet Dragon” Balsamic Soy sauces have soy sauce with wheat as an ingredient. We process our Balsamic Soy Sauces separately to avoid cross-contamination. The BBQ Sauce that we use for our Balsamic BBQ Sauces is gluten-free. Everything else is naturally Gluten Free. We do not have any Gluten Free Certifications or paperwork.

Are your products Kosher?

The short answer is no, we do not have Kosher certification.

However, we’ve had a number of customers ask that question and most have ordered anyway as they determined that our products do actually qualify as Kosher, we just do not have certification. In fact, our olive oil is actually “Star K” Kosher certified from our supplier, but because WE do not have the certification under our business name, we cannot use the certification.

Another example is that our olive oil is actually organic, but WE do not have USDA certification for organic. Water is still gluten free even if you don’t have certification to prove it.

Are your products all Natural?

Yes. We’ve made the effort to source only all-natural products and flavorings. None of our products have anything artificial. All of our flavorings are made from plant-based materials and therefore, they are also Vegan.

Shipping Questions

How do I know the shipping cost?

This depends on many different factors. Total weight, ship-to location, business or residential, limited access, time of year, fuel surcharges, etc. Shipping is not cheap. We manually look at each order to see how it can be packaged to cost the least amount possible. We also get quotes from UPS as well as three different Freight Brokers – Echo Logistics, Unishippers, and Keubix using multiple carriers (R&L Carriers, Saia, UPS Freight, Estes, XPO, etc.).

This takes calculation and time. It is impossible to calculate the shipping amount at the time of the order. We always email new customers with an exact quote prior to shipping their first order that will require approval prior to shipping your order. You can get an estimate by giving us a projected order with all the shipping details.

Can you drop ship for me?

No. All of our customers have their own label/brand and all products are made to order by the case. We can blind ship a full case or more to a separate address for you. Place a separate order and request “SHIP BLIND” in the notes section of your order.

Labeling Questions

Do you offer private label?

Yes. We have a Custom Label Program that offers design services based on our available templates. Your branding is incorporated into the templates (when available). The initial design fee is $100 which will cover all flavors/products ordered assuming the same template is used for all. There is also a charge at the time of your order for the cost of the label and application.

Click Here to fill out the Custom Label Program Questionnaire.

Click here to review the Procedures for the Setting up your Custom Label Template.

Do you offer a “branded” product?

We do offer a house label for those who don’t want to make their own label. Select the House Label drop-down option when ordering your products.

Can you recommend a printing company for our labels?

Yes, there are many choices. We have used lightninglabels.com. They have real people that answer the phone and can educate you on the printing process, your options, and how to be the most cost effective. Cost compare a few different sites and then use those quotes to receive a lower price. You may also have a local print shop that will be competitive for your business.

Tip: Make sure your label stock is oil- and water-resistant.

Can you recommend a company to design my logo, labels or other sales materials?

Yes. We have used 99designs.com for many years. You could also try Fiverr, DesignCrowd or Log Outlets. There are now also some great options to design your own through companies like Canva.

Tip: Always use a non-paper label stock. i.e. – vinyl, polyester, white BOPP, etc. Regular paper will allow water or oil to absorb into it causing discoloration and ink bleed, looking dirty and unprofessional. Your label, your brand is a mini billboard sitting on your customer’s counter. Spend a little extra to get professional looking labels. All of the labels we print through our custom label program use white matte BOPP.

Business Questions

Do you have a business plan?

We do have a business template that you can download and edit to your business needs. Click Here to download. You can also speak with the owner of the company at any time at no cost. Josh has many years of experience and can share valuable ideas and information. Email [email protected] to schedule a call.

What is the cost to open a store?

There are many variables. Please give us a call to discuss this based on your location and concept. You should expect to spend as little as $20,000 or as much as $50,000. You can certainly spend more if you want to.

Do I get an exclusive territory?

No. We are not a franchise. All of our customers have their own brand and we place no restrictions or rules on our customers. Therefore, we can’t tell them that they can’t sell in a specific area.

What are your top selling flavors?

Please CLICK HERE to view our current Top Selling Flavors List

Please note that because we work with so many different business models that there is not one “cookie-cutter” answer to this question. You want to consider the following:

1) Seasonality – Pumpkin Spice sells great in the fall, but not the rest of the year.

2) Regionality – Huckleberry is a top seller in Idaho, but not everywhere else. What is your region known for?

3) Business model – What is your niche? You will have a different customer demographic if you are a winery vs. a BBQ store, for example.

4) What do YOU like? – If you are the person greeting customers as they walk in the door and you are making suggestions of what to taste and recipe recommendations, then you will naturally sell more of what you are promoting and suggesting.

Do you have any sales tips?
Do you have any recipes?

We have recipe links available under Resources –> Marketing Ideas. We also recommend doing your own Google or AI searches. There are an almost unlimited number of resources available if you look.

Do you have any sales brochures?

No. Again, all of our customers have their own brands and business concepts.

Payment Questions

Do you accept Credit Cards?

We accept all major credit cards – Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. We do not charge extra to accept credit cards.

Do you accept Wire Transfers?

Yes. Please understand that your order will not ship until the funds are received. Click here to get our wire transfer instructions.

Do you accept ACH?

Yes. You can pay with ACH as an option on our website or you can use your bank to set up an ACH payment (click here for bank information). Orders will not be shipped until the funds are received.

Do you offer terms (Net 30)?

No. We operate our business debt-free and encourage you to do the same.

We used to work with a company that offered automatic lines of credit for purchases from companies like ours. Unfortunately, during Covid, payment defaults put them out of business. We can ensure that by not offering terms, we will stay in business and be here for your needs. We are not a bank and realized when we began this business that we wanted our company’s labor hours to be spent on creating high-quality products instead of following up for payment with customers.

We do not charge extra for using credit cards. Also, you generally have a 30-day cycle where you’re not charged for the purchase or interest which can provide up to a 30-day float and you can potentially receive rewards.

Do you offer a discount for Cash or Check?

No. We prefer Credit Cards. Credit card payment allows smooth and immediate processing of your order. We can ship your order immediately with credit card payment. You also get your air miles, cash back or other benefits when you use your credit card.

We do accept payment by cash or check although these are not preferred forms of payment. Cash can only be received on-site, which limits the number of orders that would qualify. Check payments are not preferred because it takes time for the check to clear, especially out-of-state checks. We cannot release the shipment until the check has cleared our account. In addition, it also takes time for the check to arrive in the mail – greatly increasing your lead time to receive the product.
